addressing the issues in cocoa head-on

Tony’s Chocolonely exists to end exploitation in the cocoa industry – fighting poverty, child labor and deforestation. And so, we deliberately choose to source cocoa from Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire ’cause that’s where more than 60% of the world’s cocoa is produced – and where those issues are concentrated.

In these 2 countries alone, 1.56 million children* in cocoa-growing households are engaged in child labor, 30,000 people are victims of forced labor and Ghana has lost 65% of its forest cover over the past 3 decades – and Côte d'Ivoire a devastating 90%**.

More and more people are discovering our chocolate. Last financial year, we sold 17.0M kg of chocolate. Growth is an important part of our commitment. The more chocolate we sell, the more cocoa we source according to Tony’s Sourcing Principles. As part of this we trace all cocoa from bean to bar and always pay cocoa farmers a price that enables them to earn a living income for their families.

Last year, 32,133 cocoa farmers were reached through Tony’s Open Chain, our sourcing model that enables other companies to source cocoa according to Tony’s Sourcing Principles. More than 20 companies have joined so far! The more companies that join, the more cocoa farmers we can reach together.

You know what tastes so chunking good? Raising the bar on the 3 big issues in cocoa: poverty, child labor and deforestation. We source our cocoa directly from our partner co-operatives in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. Knowing where our cocoa comes from helps us focus our efforts where they’re needed most. That’s the starting point for enabling cocoa farmers to earn a living income, tackling child labor and fighting deforestation.

We always pay cocoa farmers a price that enables them to earn a living income and invest in their productivity and farm resilience. We’re tackling child labor on cocoa farms in Ghana + Côte d’Ivoire by working with communities to identify and remediate cases. And we’re fighting deforestation in cocoa by mapping every farm, tracking risks and working with farmers to prevent and fix cases.

Tony’s partner cooperatives

The cocoa farmers we source from are affiliated with our partner cooperatives, which include Kapatchiva, Ecojad, ECAM and Socoopacdi in Côte d’Ivoire and ABOCFA, Asetenapa and Asunafo in Ghana.
